The synagogue on Fraenkelufer has undergone a welcome revival in recent years, transforming itself into a lively and growing center of young Jewish life in Berlin-Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg.
This is thanks to the immigration of Jews from all over the world and the dedicated community work of numerous volunteers at the Fraenkelufer Synagogue. Regular events on Shabbat and holidays, supplemented by a varied educational program and a diverse family program have made the synagogue more attractive again for all age groups. More and more people have found their way to Fraenkelufer and are actively involved in shaping community life. The space in the existing listed building has long since become too small, meaning that many events cannot take place as desired.
The Jüdisches Zentrum Synagoge Fraenkelufer e.V. association was founded with the reconstruction initiative. With the support of a broad alliance from politics and urban society, it aims to build a new Jewish community, cultural and educational center on the site of the original main hall of the synagogue in Kreuzberg.
In early 2019, a core team of supporters organized themselves into the Board of Trustees for the Reconstruction of the Fraenkelufer Synagogue to drive the project forward and make the vision of a new Jewish cultural center a reality.
The content concept has been developed over the past few years together with numerous partner organizations and tested as part of various projects.

The Board of Trustees for Reconstruction
The Board of Trustees plays a decisive role in the planning, organization and implementation of the project. The tasks of the Board of Trustees include
- Organization and coordination of various activities required for reconstruction, such as cooperation with planners and experts.
- It strives for financing and fundraising, i.e. the procurement of funds, donations, grants and other financial support for the reconstruction.
- Cultural and historical advice to ensure that the reconstruction takes into account the historical and cultural context.
- Public relations and awareness-raising to inform the general public about the progress of the project and the importance of reconstruction for society.
- Cooperation with the Jewish community on Fraenkelufer to take their needs and concerns into account.
Raed Saleh, the leader of the SPD parliamentary group in Berlin and co-initiator of the project, was elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Prof. Dr. Engelbert Lütke Daldrup was elected as construction commissioner in 2022.
