The Open-Air Cinema at Fraenkelufer is back! The garden of the Fraenkelufer Synagogue in Kreuzberg will once again host our annual open-air cinema! Starting August 23, we cordially invite you on three Wednesday evenings to inspiring films and exciting discussions focusing on current topics of Jewish life. Join us for a cinematic experience on these warm summer evenings in front of the backdrop of the historic Fraenkelufer Synagogue.

With our open-air cinema, the synagogue opens its doors to the wider neighborhood. Following this, the focus of this year's program is on films that deal with neighborhoods in a Jewish context. We want to show different points of view and create a platform for an open dialogue. After each screening we will have a discussion with the audience as well as the filmmakers.

A small village 40 years ago on the Syrian-Turkish border - little Sero experiences his first school year, plays naughty pranks with his comrades, and dreams of a TV so he can finally watch cartoons. On the Sabbath, he is allowed to light the lights of his Jewish neighbours, with whom his family has a close friendship. At the same time, he witnesses the adults being increasingly crushed by nationalistic despotism and violence. With a fine sense of humor and satire, director Mano Khalil finds light moments whilst painting a picture of a childhood under the Assad dictatorship. The film is inspired by his personal childhood experiences and spans the touching narrative to the present Syrian tragedy.

It's just a high-rise on the edge of a forest, but from the people struggling for acceptance to the community, you can tell that this must be a last civilised haven in a world gone off the rails. Those living there are shielded from a perilous environment. But when the janitor's dog disappears, an irrational fear spreads among the residents. Anna, the security officer, is called to search for the animal. However, her daughter, Iris, is convinced that she and her "evil eye" are at fault for the dog's disappearance, and locks herself in the bathroom. When a newly formed vigilante group demands harsher security measures and household aptitude measures, Anna begins to fear that her right for refuge in the community is at jeopardy.

In Natalia Sinelnikova's feature-length debut, the microcosm of the high-rise is the playing field for a timeless dystopian experiment. At it's core, the film speaks to the power of fear as a self-replication system with the capacity to disrupt societal cohesion, with long dictated current social and political discourse.

A civil engineer is found dead in the German-Polish border region, but she was murdered in Cottbus, where she was supervising the renovation of an apartment block. Inspector Raczek travels to his old haunt to investigate the case with an ex-colleague, which involves unresolved house ownership issues between a long-established resident and a Holocaust survivor. Carefully developed (TV) crime thriller that quite cleverly takes up the guilt-ridden German past as a theme.
